You will need good brushes, combs and mat rakes if you will be trying to keep it up yourself. You need to keep the mats out so that their skin is healthy. With their long hair, Beardies can track mud and debris from the outside right into your nice clean home, and they may try to rub it off on your furniture or better yet, YOU! Did you know that the Beardie is a herding dog? That means they like to herd kids, cats and other dogs. Beardies, many of them, bark...they are very vocal! If you Beardie eats something that may not agree with them, their tummy can be sensitive and the result can get stuck on their behind and on their tail. This is a pretty dirty job to get cleaned up, so be prepared. Beardies need to have a yard, preferably a tall fence. Beardies like to romp and run. They need exercise. Some Beardies like to dig, so you do need to keep an eye on them so that they don’t escape. Beardies can get frightened and take off. Beardies need people. They love to jump up and greet you, so when a puppy, it’s a good time to start your training. Beardie people love Beardie stories and, believe me, there are many. These dogs are lively and enrich our lives. Beardies are very smart and are known to outsmart their owners if you aren’t careful. As cute as they are, we do tend to spoil them!! Beardies, if kept alone may bark, get into mischief or develop anxieties. Beardies are known to open doors, counter-surf for food, rearrange your clothing, grab the remote control for your t.v. Yes, they get bored! Beardies need training. Positive training works best for a Beardie. Beardies respond to rewards! If you or anyone that will be living with your Beardie is apt to yell or shout at the Beardie, don’t get a Beardie. Many cannot tolerant this treatment and will end up a neurotic dog. Good for you that you are reading this and educating yourself to see if they are the right breed for you. Questions to ask BEFORE you buy a puppy!
